history - Crowspirit: A History Empty Crowspirit: A History

Born Root, Crowspirit’s parent’s knew that she would be a stubborn child. Although she played with fellow cubs and tribemates, she was content with playing on her own and was driven by a fascination of the simplest things. Her mother was gentle and thoughtful while her father was a gruff follower of the Way. At a young age, Crowspirit knew she wouldn’t be able to live in the Now as well as others, and this unsettled her. She confided in her mother this insecurity, and her mother reassured her that not everyone was so bent set on it like Knotbeard was. Her father tried to pound the Way and his own gruffness into her, which is partly why she isn’t like that (as she will be what she chooses and not what people try to force). She spent some time with him, but disliking his forceful ways, spent more time with her mother. The two grew very close because of this.

Knotbeard trained her with his preferred weapons, a bow and spear, and she picked up quickly. She did not like the bow or spear, though, especially since her father wouldn’t let her try any other weapon. Unfortunately, her natural knack for aim made spear and bow the most practical weapons for her and she wouldn’t overlook that asset to the tribe just to spite her father. One day, at age 19, she was observing the beauty and intricacy of a spider web. An insect flew into it and got stuck, then she watched the spider rolling it up in silks and feeding on it. She knew how spiders caught and ate their prey, but this one moment gave her the idea of using the spider’s ways to catch her prey. After developing the design of her new weapon (with the help of a particularly innovative tribemate), she had The Silks and Spider. This aggravated her father to no end. She also prefers the honour of looking her prey in the eyes when she kills it.

When she was 68, Knotbeard was bit by a creature with the frothing mouth while alone on a hunt. He killed the animal and disposed of it, then returned to the tribe and told them what had happened. At the time they had no healer or way to prevent madness from entering the elf [if this conflicts with any current history of the tribe, let me know and we can make it happen at a different time X)], so he agreed to leave the tribe to die on his own and far away. Stone, being extremely loyal (like her daughter), chose to leave with her lifemate and ensured that he wouldn't return to the tribe in madness, bringing disease to them. Before they left, Stone gave her her daughter a piece of her necklace (although she never wore it, she kept it tucked safely away in her hollow. In times when she was troubled, though, she would take it out). During this time, Crowspirit became more reserved than usual, constantly sending to her mother to keep in touch. This period of time greatly honed her sending skills, as she had to send farther and farther away as time went by. Eventually, however, she could no longer reach her mother, whether it was because she was out of range or dead, Crowspirit wasn’t sure. Due to the sendings from her mother, she knew that her father was beyond hope of help, but she still holds the possibility that Stone is alive and constantly tries to send to her. Now she carries resentment towards her father because he is the reason her mother is gone.

After she lost contact, she became terribly reserved from the tribe, barely speaking with anyone. Because her mother, who was literally her stone when she doubted herself (and was, in her daughter’s eyes, the closest thing she had to touching the Now), Crowspirit felt like she had lost the Now entirely, and consequently the Way as well. She left the tribe to search for it in silent contemplation. While she was gone, she happened upon a crow that fascinated her. She observed the crows for some time, finding they possessed many admirable qualities. This surprised her because she would have never expected it coming from the scavenger that many looked at with disgust. Eventually she realized that, like a crow, she was different from assumptions. Not all WolfFolk were set followers of the Way and lived in the Now, and she could intertwine the Way with her Way. This was the first independent step she took to an unfinished journey of acceptance. As a tribute to her mentors, and as a reminder to carry with her the qualities of a crow and use them to benefit her tribe, she took on the name Crowspirit.

Upon returning to her tribe, she encountered a stranger and confronted him. A hunting party soon came across them and informed her of how he had joined the tribe while she was away. Protective of her tribe, she was always a little wary of him. One day, she found him with her mother’s necklace (which she had lost earlier when she had taken it out). She took it back and left to her the oak she and her mother had often spent time at, resenting the fact that he had found it. He followed and told her of his encounter with her parents. An immediate friendship was not formed, but it was the start of a relationship and trust that would grow into one of her strongest friendships.
