Ridge's Den Empty Re: Ridge's Den

Post by Ember Robinwood Mon Jan 19, 2015 3:26 pm

The journey back to the Holt had been a long one. Ridge had listened to the cubs chatter, much of it washing over him. He loved the cubs, but all he wanted now was to sit and think.

Pathfinder paced beside him, refusing to be ridden. A low growl rumbled in the wolf's throat, sensing Ridge's distress. Ridge scratched him behind the ears, but said nothing. Twig fell silent quickly enough, looking up at his older brother. The cub was sensitive and knew something was bothering the cub-minder.

Upon returning to the Holt, Ridge didn't want to run into anyone or confront them about what had happened at the festival, from the daggertooth attack, to Tern and Kaimeta's Recognition.

The entrance to Ridge's den was located at the base of the Everhome tree. The narrow entrance sat above a tangle of roots. It was a squeeze for a broad elf to get in, too small for large animals, such as the wolves. That was the reason this was Ridge's den: to keep the cubs safe. It was low enough that it was easily accessible to the cubs, but the entrance was narrow enough that nothing could get it.

The den consisted of one room. There aren't proper beds, but piles of furs. There is a low table with three chairs. The walls are lined with shelves that were shaped from the tree itself and have a number of baskets that hold Ridge and the cub's personal belongings. The den isn't large, but it is warm with an earthen feel to it.

Ridge tucked the cubs into their furs. After the excitement of the day, they put up little to no protest. As tired as he felt, sleep wasn't something Ridge thought he could do at the moment.

He settled down by the entrance to the den with his back against the smoothly shaped wall. He was glad to be back, but thoughts of Tern and Swirling kept bubbling up in his mind. Where would either of them fit into his life? He stared at the wall without actually seeing it, thinking.

Ridge's Den Empty Re: Ridge's Den

Crowspirit was still lazing in the Everhome Tree's branches when her tribemates arrived home. She sat up, alert, as their scents and sounds found her nostrils and ears.

*The festival go well?* she sent openly, feeling the need to make sure everything was well before she continued her conversation with Silence.

Ridge's Den Empty Re: Ridge's Den

Post by Ember Robinwood Wed Jan 21, 2015 1:55 am

Ridge was startled from his brooding by Crowspirit's sending. He raised his head, looking at the ceiling of his den in the general direction of where she was in the branches of the tree far overhead.

**As well as it could,** he lock-sent to her. Ridge's sending carried an edge to it, one that wasn't typical for the gentle cub-minder. Alone and brooding in his den, except for the sleeping cubs, wasn't healthy, but he didn't want to face the rest of his tribe. **All peaceful here?**

Ridge's Den Empty Re: Ridge's Den

Crowspirit's passive features flickered at the edge in her tribemate's sending, but quickly returned to normal once she had registered and filed away her surprise. She cocked her head curiously towards his den, then looked back up, not wanting to reveal to Silence the private conversation taking place.

**Yes. Only Silence, Stormcloud, and you have returned. Skybolt left earlier, but has come back with Stormcloud. I'm sorry if the festival was disappointing,** she answered his question, and allowed for an open-ended statement to follow. If he wanted to talk about anything he would, but he did not have to.

Secretly, Crowspirit hoped he would not confide in her, choosing to conceal his feelings until he could speak to a more capable elf. She chided herself for thinking such things, as it was not putting the well-being of the tribe first, but she still did not feel equipped for emotional dilemmas.

Ridge's Den Empty Re: Ridge's Den

**The festival wasn't disappointing, just surprising and eventful,** Ridge explain to Crowspirit. It wasn't that he didn't trust her, but she wasn't one for him to talk to, not about the events that had taken place that day. He felt guilty about the edge his sending had carried, **Forgive my shortness, I am simply tired.**

Surprised, he sat up straighter, though no one could see him. He hadn't seen Skybolt at the festival and Stormcloud had run off during their dance. Concerned, he lock-sent, **Is Skybolt alright? I haven't seen her all day.**

Ridge's Den Empty Re: Ridge's Den

**Understandable,** Crowspirit replied, a tension that she had not noticed releasing from her shoulders, **The missing cubs must've taken a great toll on you.**

Ridge's question brought the same one up in Crowspirit's mind. She had known the she-elf left and returned, but had not yet found out whether she was alright. **Don't know,** she lock-sent, **I'll let you know as soon as I learn. I'd guess she's fine, though; we'd know if anything really serious happened.**

Ridge's Den Empty Re: Ridge's Den

Post by Ember Robinwood Wed Jan 21, 2015 4:41 pm

**Indeed,** Ridge lock-sent, not wanting Crowspirit to know that his tiredness and tangled emotions had little to do with the missing cubs at this point. **Thankfully the cubs were safe.**

He frowned when Crowspirit admitted that she didn't know if Skybolt was alright or not. **Stormcloud left the festival in a hurry. I hope nothing happened to her mother. You know how Skybolt is sometimes.**

He smiled slightly at the thought of the stubborn she-elf. Skybolt was fierce, but, in Rige's opinion, didn't always have a lot of common sense when it came to certain matters.

Ridge's Den Empty Re: Ridge's Den

Post by WolfCandy Thu Jan 22, 2015 8:10 pm

Originally, Crowspirit had not been too concerned at Skybolt's absence, but Ridge's mention of Stormcloud changed things. Now, a familiar worry began to expand in her stomach. **Heh,** she mind-snorted in her sending, **Good point. Stormcloud didn't say why she left?** she asked, careful to not reveal her worry to Silence, **Stormcloud hasn't said anything since getting back.**

She wondered if she should tell Silence, but decided against it. She would hold off until she found out if Skybolt really wasn't okay.

Ridge's Den Empty Re: Ridge's Den

Post by Ember Robinwood Fri Jan 23, 2015 12:57 am

**Please, let me know how they're doing when you find out,** Ridge asked Crowspirit. He was concerned about Skybolt, but he didn't have the energy to reach out and send to Stormcloud or Skybolt herself.

Could this possibly be what Recognition felt like? Ridge wondered. He felt exhausted and drained, as though he was breaking on the inside. It had been a single day, but so much had happened and so much had gone wrong. Perhaps, if Tern hadn't Recognized... Perhaps, if he'd only met Swirling...

Ridge shook his head. He'd be wishing ill on everyone if he continued thinking that way. Perhaps it would have been kinder to the High One and Tern if they hadn't Recognized, but that would be unfair to the cub they would one day have.

He wished wholeheartedly that he could return to his life before he'd met Tern, but that was impossibly. Besides, he'd met Swirling while waiting for Tern to return from the ocean. Perhaps this was fate's cruelly twisted joke.

Ridge sighed, bowing his head. He wouldn't allow himself to cry, not whole the cubs were sleeping just feet from him. He had to be strong for them... and for himself. He just needed to forget Tern and move on...

**Of course,** Crowspirit lock-sent, quickly followed by a **Stormcloud says they're fine** once she had received word from her other tribemate. **The day's been long,** she continued, not wanting to exhaust the elf further, **I'll let you sleep now.**

Ridge's Den Empty Re: Ridge's Den

Post by Ember Robinwood Sat Jan 24, 2015 2:36 am

**Thank you, Crowspirit,** Ridge lock-sent back, his gratitude evident. He was grateful that she'd told him both Stormcloud and Skybolt were fine, as well as letting him rest.

He rose from his perch by the den entrance and returned to the "nest" he shared with the cubs. He lay down, careful not to disturb the cubs. He sighed as he lay on his side, staring at the entrance to the den. He was so torn and exhausted!

He closed his eyes. He would leave before dawn and head to the beach to await Swirling, he would try and put Tern behind himself, and he would return his devotion to caring for the cubs of the tribe. He didn't need a lovemate, not now. His first duty was to his tribe and his brother and sister. They had to come first. Though it felt far off, sleep came upon Ridge, wrapping him in its welcome embrace.
